We bird mature southern-beech forest along the access road, then work nearby coves, kelp lines, and river mouths for Beagle Channel birdlife. Season: October to May (best); operable year-round weather-permitting
Service: Private – Birding & coastal cuisine focused
Departure: Morning (7–8 AM)

Optional add-on from Puerto Almanza (~1.5 h)

Itinerary

Depart Ushuaia → RN3 to J Road

Scenic drive east along RN3 before descending the winding J Road toward the Beagle Channel. The route crosses mature southern-beech forest, open peatlands, and valleys shaped by beaver ponds and dams. We make light, targeted roadside stops—just enough to tune ears and eyes and sample the landscape before reaching the coast.

Beagle shoreline sweep

Initial birding along kelp-lined shores, mixed rocky and muddy intertidal margins, and small patches of coastal marsh. We use easy roadside pull-offs for calm, scope-led viewing, scanning for a broad mix of aquatic, coastal, and marine birds moving along the channel.

Puerto Almanza — Harbor, piers & coastal coves

A slow circuit through the fishing village and its surroundings: skiffs at anchor, working piers, kelp-fringed shorelines, and nearby coves and creek mouths just east of the harbor. Gentle coastal walks and short hops between viewpoints allow close observation and photography, with changing light and tide often revealing different activity along wave-washed edges and sheltered inlets.

Fishermen-run lunch stop

Seafood lunch at a local, fishermen-run restaurant overlooking the Beagle Channel—king crab and seasonal catch are central to the experience (non-seafood alternatives available on request). This is an unhurried break and a key part of the day, blending local culture and cuisine with the landscape, while keeping optics handy in case movement picks up in the bay.

Return leg

Drive back toward Ushuaia with flexibility for opportunistic stops if light, weather, or conditions suggest a final look—perhaps a coastal pull-off or a quiet beech-forest edge before re-entering the city.
