TIERRA DEL FUEGO BIRDING TOURS

Explore the southernmost landscapes through the eyes of their birds.

Guided birding experiences in Tierra del Fuego’s diverse habitats, from subantarctic forests to coastal wetlands.

Birding at the end of the world

Follow the route of early explorers into Tierra del Fuego’s most remote habitats

“These forests are dense and tangled with branches and fallen trunks, which are covered with moss and lichen. Despite the grandeur of the landscape, the darkness and frequent impassability of the forests, combined with the weather, gives the land a melancholy quality on which visitors have frequently remarked.” — Charles Darwin, The Voyage of the Beagle (1839)

Subantarctic forests cover much of Tierra del Fuego, dominated by southern beech. Dense canopies, mossy understories, and streams create rich habitats where many of the region’s characteristic forest birds can be observed.

The Patagonian steppe forms the vast open landscapes of northern Tierra del Fuego. Wind-shaped grasslands and low shrubs create a dry, treeless environment where ground-dwelling birds and open-country specialists thrive.

Lakes, lagoons, rivers, and streams form a continuous freshwater network across Tierra del Fuego. From forest creeks to steppe lagoons, these waters create rich habitats where many birds gather to feed, breed, and move through the landscape.

Above the treeline in Tierra del Fuego’s Andes, exposed slopes, rocky ridges, and alpine grasslands replace forests. Wind, snow, and thin soils shape a sparse landscape where highly specialized alpine species persist.

The Beagle Channel forms a sheltered marine corridor in southern Tierra del Fuego. Islands, rocky shores, and kelp forests create productive feeding areas where coastal and marine birds gather and can often be observed at close range.

The Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego is wide, windy, and shaped by strong tides. Gravel beaches, sandy shores, and broad mudflats create key feeding areas where large numbers of shorebirds gather along the exposed coastline.
