Río Grande Steppe Birding

~10 h (Full Day) / Overnight: 2 days (~8 h per day)
In northern Tierra del Fuego, wind-shaped grasslands, low shrub and a chain of shallow partly saline lagoons define true open-country birding.

OVERVIEW

About the Tour

In northern Tierra del Fuego, wind-shaped grasslands, low shrub and a chain of shallow partly saline lagoons define true open-country birding. We prioritize the interior steppe, working lagoon edges—muddy and gravelly—and short-grass flats with unhurried, scope-led stops. When timing allows, we include a brief look at the Atlantic coast to acknowledge its role as a key route for long-distance migrants and some local movements.

Difficulty: Low – vehicle-based scanning with short step-out stops; minimal walking
Season: October to May
Service: Private – Birding focused
Departure: Morning (7–8 AM)

Notes:

  • Wind shapes the day; routing and stop length adapt for comfort and quality views.
  • Lunch included (packed field lunch, hot drinks, and water); advise dietary needs in advance.
  • Early start recommended (~07:00) due to distance and habitat coverage.
  • An overnight (2 days/1 night) meaningfully improves overall chances and flexibility.

Suggestions

  • Wear layered clothing and waterproof outerwear – weather in Tierra del Fuego can shift quickly
  • Use comfortable walking shoes – trails may include forest paths, peat bogs, and uneven terrain
  • Bring binoculars – they will greatly enhance your birding experience
  • This tour is suitable for all levels – from curious nature lovers to seasoned birders

LOCATION

Tour highlights

  • Careful, scope-based scanning of partly saline shallow lagoons as a core stop, the prime setting for Magellanic Plover, with nearby muddy and gravelly margins used by plovers and dotterels.
  • Short-turf plains and low shrub mosaics that favor classic open-steppe birds such as Tawny-throated Dotterel, Austral Canastero, Patagonian Miner, and Yellow-bridled Finch, approached with patient, mostly stationary viewing.
  • Focused attention on Ruddy-headed Goose in key breeding areas, with Ashy-headed and Upland Goose occurring in surrounding steppe habitats where conditions are suitable.

Itinerary

Early morning – Forest–steppe ecotone transition

Depart Ushuaia along RN3 through Subantarctic southern beech (Nothofagus) forest that gradually shrinks into dwarf, patchy beech islands embedded in steppe vegetation. Horizons open, grasses dominate, and guanacos are often seen as the landscape shifts from forest to open country. We generally keep moving on this stretch, stopping only for exceptional sightings.

Mid-morning – Open steppe access (Río Grande interior)

Arrival to true Patagonian steppe: short-grass flats, low shrubs and shallow brackish lagoons. We continue on interior tracks with vehicle-assisted birding and short, targeted step-outs to work lagoon margins, vegas and short-turf plains with the scope.

Late morning to midday – Interior lagoon circuit. Focus on key wetlands and surrounding steppe:

* Estancia Los Flamencos lagoon complex (known breeding area for Magellanic Plover in season) and nearby vegas that can support Ruddy-headed Goose. <br> * Steppe mosaics for classic interior specialists (miners, canasteros, ground-tyrants, pipits), adjusting to wind and light for quality, unhurried views.

Midday to early afternoon – Shift toward the coast (birding en route)

We reposition toward the estuary, birding along the way to pick up potential morning misses and diversify habitats.

Coastal session – Estuary & urban reserve

Timed to tide where possible, we scan the Provincial Atlantic Coastal Reserve and Punta Popper Urban Reserve: estuary mouth, mud/sand flats and low dune margins. Methodical scope work for coastal and shore species; seasonally, long-distance migrants move through.

Wrap-up & return

Depending on conditions and light, we close the day after a final coastal scan and begin the drive back to Ushuaia.
